Tell us a little about yourself:
Hellooo! My name is Alissa Laughlin. I am a third generation studio artist currently living in Philly. I work with a variety of mediums including acrylic painting, installation work, and photography. I have recently been getting into fiber art and just launched an upcycled jewelry line. All of my materials are made from old clothing, vintage fabrics, and other rescued material that I turned into jewelry.

What drives your artistic process? What inspires you? Or who inspires you?

I can’t really pin point what drives my artistic process. I use everything as some type of inspiration. Ever since I was little I have always had the urge to create things. My mother and grandmother (who are also artists) introduced me to many aspects of the arts at an early age. I spent a lot of time observing their projects and ideas, which helped me develop my craft. I remember thinking how weird my mother was when she came up from her studio with nude figure drawings and hand made puppets. After a series of mannequin installations I exhibited, I realized I totally turned into one of those weirdos and I love it. I have learned to work with a lot of color to express an idea or emotion. I enjoy arriving at a finished piece on a very symbolic/abstracted way. My mom taught me a lot about finding your own voice through art and I think the interaction of color is what touches me the most.

Besides creating your art, what do you do?

I am back in school for a post BA certification. I am studying digital media for web and print which is helping me become more tech savvy so I can get into more commercial work. I am also in the process of starting my own art coop in Philly with my brother. We are buying space where we can create an environment that houses studio units and helps local artists promote their work. It is a big project to take on but I want to embark on work that sees things in a bigger picture. Life is too short to limit my potential.

Do you sell/display your work anywhere else online or locally?

I am selling a series of underwater photographs around Philly including local restaurants and coffee shops. I am selling my jewelry line on etsy as well. I have turned into an accidental free lancer.

Where do you do your work? In a studio space, your room etc? and how do you keep it organized?

I have a studio in a big industrial warehouse right down the road from my apartment. It is super convenient and helpful to have my own space that I can make a mess in. It is not clean but it is somewhat organized…? I am slowly coming to grips that I am incapable of being a spotless person when it comes to art making . I sometimes get stressed out or overwhelmed when everything is all over the place . I am a very visual person. When my room, closet, or studio is clean I feel like my head has more clarity to start a project but it’s usually the other way around.

Where would you like to be in five years...ten years?

I would like to be a successful owner of my studio/gallery business. I see myself running events that involve community building and make a difference in the arts in this city. I just want to really put my self out there in the world and become involved with everything! I wouldn’t mind being on a billboard or front page of a magazine smiling with my jewelry line. I also wouldn’t mind traveling the world to get more culture or art inspired ideas going. So much to do!

Here's What I Made for $1:

Recycled Tshirt Pillow Covers

Great For Indoors and Outdoors!

You will need:

An old tshirt, large enough for the pillow you will be covering

Scissors

A Flat, Clean Surface

Needle and Thread or Sewing Machine/Serger

Step 1: Place the pillow you wish to cover over the tshirt, make sure there is at least 2 inches of excess fabric for each side

Step 2: Cut along sides of the tshirt, leaving enough room to sew a seam, leave the bottom hem of the tshirt intact, that will be your already finished edge of the pillow case opening.

Step 3: Repeat on the other side and then cut JUST below the collar line

Here's what you should end up with when you are done cutting

Step 4: Flip remaining pillow shape inside out and sew all three sides together, leaving the hemmed side open to slip the pillow into

Flip it right side out and it's ready for a pillow!

Saving Money and Recycling Around The Farm

You may already do some of these things but I just wanted to share some of the ways I recycle and save money on the farm

1. Save Glass Containers for drinking glasses

I have quite a little eclectic collection of drinking glasses that I've saved from old sauce containers, pickle jars etc...

I have not had to buy new drinking glasses in years since I am always inadvertently obtaining them at the grocery store.

If there is a label on the glass jar, soak it in warm soapy water for a few hours and then you can pull off the label with little or no residue left behind. If there is something still on the glass it will come off in a few cycle in your dishwasher or regular hand washing.

2. Visit Your Local Thrift Store/Salvation Army for unique Cooking Utensils and Silverware

I do not know if it's just in my household but spoon seem to disappear and never come back so instead of going out and buying a whole new set of complete silverware I just go to the thrift store and pick up more spoons or forks etc for as little as .25 or .10 cents a piece!

I have found some really gorgeous silverware patterns in the past year which makes my collection very interesting for myself and guests...

I also get used cooking utensils and give them a nice good washing before using them. I found this set of dutch pattern cooking utensils a year ago for $1.00 and an amazing wine opener for .50!

3. Use Old Clothing For Rags, Dishcloths and Dish washing Sponges.

If you have old tshirts, jeans, crochet doilies with stains or rips of tears..give them a new purpose by using them to clean your house!

You can wash them in the washing machine and air dry (I would not recommend using the dryer if you have used the rags with heavy cleaning agents because they can be flammable)

Old crochet doilies and clothing items with some texture to them are great for dish washing

I think they do a better job at cleaning than paper towels or sponges..my mom always had cleaning rags in the closest all ready so you could just grab them and clean up.

4. Reuse your plastic containers or heavy paper containers for food storage

My mom would always love to give my brother and I food to take home with them after a yummy meal but she feared that she would never see her nice glass or Tupperware containers again(and most of the time she didn't)! To solve the problem she would save her plastic containers from takeout meals, yogurt, cottage cheese, coffee bins etc and not even think twice about sending us away with a home cooked meal.

I also do that now, and I always have a stash to use for leftovers to put in the fridge as well or the coffee containers off heavier cardboard are great for storing grains and rice in the cupboard

5. Refill your ink cartridges for less than .20 cents each!

Two years ago I stopped buying ink from the big companies like Epson, Cannon etc and I have literally saved hundreds of dollars. I use my print quite often for pictures, postage labels, receipts, labels etc and it would always irk me to have to go out and spend $14 to $20 for each cartridge...it never made sense to me!

I researched online and found an awesome company on Ebay called BigDrop and they sell Do It Yourself Ink Systems. I bought compatible cartridges for my printer and bulk into refill with...the whole set only cost me $20.00 and I've only had to buy more bulk ink once(black) and that only cost me $5.00.

They have the ink systems for almost every printer you can imagine. When your printer says you've run out, you take out the cartridge and refill the color(not a messy job like you would think it would be!) then put back the cartridge and you're home free. The cartridges they sell have have override chip in them to make the printer think you are always putting in a brand new cartridge.

I just love it because I am never stranded mid project without ink...and my wallet isn't crying anymore either!

What I Made For $1: Recycled Tshirt Tote Bag

This Thursday's What I Made For $1 is a lot of fun...and it only takes about five minutes to create!

Recycled Tshirt Shopping Tote

I got this pretty blue spiral tie dye at the Salvation Army for .99 and thought it would look great as a shopping tote. No sewing Machine required!

I've seen this done many different ways but this is the way I do it, and I'd love to pass it along to you!

You Will Need:

1 Tshirt

Scissors

Pins

Sewing Machine Or Serger Or Needle and Thread

Five Minutes of Uninterrupted Creative Bliss

Here are the steps:

1: Lay Tshirt Flat On Table

2: Cut Sleeves Of Leaving Serge Stitched Edge on Tshirt

3: Repeat Step 2 for other sleeve

4: Cut neckline in a U shape in the desired depth you'd like(don't cut to low or items might fall out of your bag!)

5: Cut the finished hems off of both sleeves and put aside for later (they will serve has cute little ties for the straps)

6: Cut bottom of tshirt off in a semi curve

7: Turn Tshirt inside out and pin bottom of tshirt into four inward facing folds(or more smaller folds if you'd like

8: Serge, sew with your machine OR hand stitch the bottom of the tshirt together.

9: Turn Tshirt right side out

10: Take the sleeve hems that you previously cut of tie them around the straps of the tshirt

11: It should look like this when you are finished!

What I Made For $1 Thursdays

Hello!

I'm going to start sharing some really great, amazingly cheap(and sometimes free!) projects you can do with your old clothing and fabrics.....I'm going to attempt to do this every Thursday!

Here is my first posting for What I Made For $1:

Hula Hoop Weaving

So far this week I've made a recycled tshirt fabric bowl (above)

and a beautiful recycled calico spring colored wall hanging/place mat/chair cushion/whatever you want it to be:

I am NOT good a writing instructions although some posts I may attempt to but luckily I've found a great blog(her blog is awesome!) called: Imagine Lovely and she has written out great instructions for us if you are interested in making your own piece! Here is the link.

I've used Tshirt material for the bowl. I made a bowl shape by tightening the warp threads when I tied it off. It made the woven tshirt fabric crunch back on itself which makes the circular shape.

The second piece is a lot more tight and solid since I used smaller thinner strands of calico cotton and only a few strands of magenta tshirt material.

You could also cut your plain colored plastic bags and when you are done spray paint the piece golden.

If you are making a wall hanging it would be great to hang little trinkets off the weave if you have an old orphaned earring laying around that needs an new home!

Materials:

Hula Hoop $1 at the Dollar Store...don't forget to experiment with size... tiny little hoops and huge

hoops!

Warp Threads(anything you choose)

Weft Threads(also could be anything you choose).

This is also a great project because you can put it down and pick it up and continue anytime without loosing your place!

I am a 38 year old mother of two boys, my passion is making jewelry. I can get lost in my own little world when I get into my studio. I also own a small farm where we raise our own organic meat, vegetabes ,and eggs. So my life is very busy and my jewelry time is usually at night when my kids are in bed.

What drives your artistic process? What inspires you? Or who inspires you?

There is so much that inspires me. Nature, or things I find in my back yard. I come from a family of crafty women; my grandmother was a wounderful knitter, my mom used to sew all our clothes. I was always looking for something that was different to wear so I love to make jewelry thats organic looking and not perfect with mostly nature inspired themes. The people I meet at craft shows or on etsy that have been making a living doing what they love to do really inspires me, I hope someday to be making a living designing jewelry that makes people smile and feel good when they wear it.

Besides creating your art, what do you do?

I have been a hair stylist for 19 years and I own a hair salon as well. I work part time because of my boys and at night I make jewelry.

When did you know you were an artist?

Being a hairstylist is very creative work, but I didnt realize I had more in me until I started making jewelry about 5 years ago. I took a class in beading and made myself a cute pair of earrings than I started making earrings for customers at the salon. That wasnt enough for me and I was always looking for neat, one of a kind sterling silver jewelry, so I started working with pmc and fell in love! It wasnt untill recently when one of my customers was buying a piece of my jewelry and said "Boy Katy, you are really an artist" and those kind words made my day. I guess that's when I realized I was an artist.

Where do you do your artwork? In a Studio space, spare room of your house etc? and how do you keep it organize?

My wonderful husband made a studio space for me in our basement. It is really great because when the boys go to bed I head down to the basement. I have my kiln and everything set up. It really is a basement but it works. I have shelves and a work bench and lots of clear plastic containers to store my things in. I also keep my craft show set up packed away in storage tubs which make it easy to travel to shows plus it keeps everything clean ( because of being in the basement). I always wanted to get a studio space away from the home but the convience of having it in my home and the cost (free) made me rethink that and now I have really bonded with my little space in the basement.

What are your loves and frustrations with having an Etsy shop? and do you sell/display your work anywhere else?

I love having my etsy shop but it's hard for me to keep up with listing new items so I think I get lost in the huge sea of jewelry on there. I have a small display of my jewelry at my hair salon and I try to do a handful of shows every year. I have had a few people contact me to put a number of pieces in their shops. That is my goal for this year to try to make my jewelry a full time business!

Tell Me A little About Yourself?

I am 30 years old; yikes!! I was born in Cody, WY and lived there until I
was 19; after that I have moved around the country many times. Wandering
aimlessly yet with purpose is what I do best after my artwork and being married
to my wonderful husband Daniel Anderson for the past 6 years. I met him when I
moved to Savannah, GA......the first time; my financial aid fell through last
minute to The Savannah College of Art and Design, so I essentially became
homeless and therefore had to get a job. Daniel hired me for that job at the
Country Inn and Suites, but we didn't start dating until a month after I left
that job. A year later I moved back to Cody when I found out my grandmother got
breast cancer, so that I could help take care of her. She beat the cancer, but 4
months later my mother was diagnosed with a very rare kind of breast cancer.
Unfortunately, she was taken by the cancer last May at age 48. I will miss her
horribly; I have done many pieces of artwork dedicated to my mother or breast
cancer awareness.

What drives your artistic process? What inspires you? Or who inspires you?

Ever since I could hold a pencil, I have been creating in one way or
another. Making artwork is like cheap therapy.......well.......cheap compared to
seeing a shrink. Everyone and everything inspires me; most artists operate by
osmosis.....absorbing places, people, and experiences like a sponge. It's pretty
easy to know what's going on in my mind by the kind of work I'm creating.

Besides creating your art, what do you do?

Other than creating artwork, I love love love to travel and take in all that
life has to offer. I love roadtrips; stopping at cheasy tourist attractions
makes me giddy. I also spend a lot of time with my sister, Chelsea and my
nephew, Caden. Spending lots of time watching terrible old horror movies with my
hubby is my favorite pastime though; Alligator People may be the best one.

When did you know you were an artist?

I grew up in a family where almost everyone was artistically talented in one
way or another, so I didn't know I had any artistic talent until I started
school.

Where do you do your artwork? In a Studio space, spare room of your house etc? and how do you keep it organize?

All of my painting is done hunched over my canvas covered coffee table in my
living room or on the floor. I have to go all the way to Cody to do any of my
metal work; that's were my biological father, Jeff, lives. We work out of a
steel grainery; he taught me all I know about metal sculpture. There is
absolutely no organization in my world; no space for such a thing, but I do pine
for a studio.

What are your loves and frustrations with having an Etsy shop? and do you sell/display your work anywhere else?

The only thing that frustrates me about Etsy is that I have a hard time
selling anything on there; I can almost never get a showcase spot, and since it
only lasts for a day I can't get enough exposure. I do sell some of my work on
ebay from time to time, and I also take my work to local galleries. I dream
about owning my own gallery when we move back east, but I do have to sell enough
work for a down payment on a building first. Personal portraits are also another
way I am trying to build a little nest egg.

Hello! Two great puzzle pieces of news today.....New Items Posting this afternoon(finally!) AND I'm very excited to announce the merger of Revolve Vintage and Mountain Girl Clothing in Keene NH! I'll be selling a few racks of Mountain Girl Clothing for all the lovely ladies in the area in a REAL storefront! I've been having trouble sleeping because of all the ideas I've got about this floating around my brain!

Revolve Vintage is an amazing store and Mike has done a really phenomenal job with it...if you notice the Etsy shop looks a little cleaned out that's because I've been slowly transferring a few items into Revolve Vintage....No worries though! Mountain Girl on Etsy will still be in FULL force and I'll be posting the same amount of items each week just twice a week instead of a few items each day

I love the landscape around my house...but frankly there just wasn't enough color for me with all the leaves and flowers not blooming quite yet...so I decided to take some Mountain Girl action.

I have many lovely and colorful sweater pieces left over from the winter months of creating legwarmers, neck warmers and scarves etc...so what to do with all the lovely leftovers?

All creations are serge stitched and come with tie closures(except the stump huggers since you can just slip them over the top) and are treated with UV Fabric Protector to make sure the colors stay vibrant and lively!

GoodBye Winter Blah Blahs Hello 100% Organic Tan

I know the following is going to sound like an infomerical but I am SEROUSLY excited about this stuff and wanted to share it with my mountain girls.

I was looking in the mirror a few weeks ago and was sick of seeing my winter white skin.

Lying in the sun just seemed SO far away but I knew I just wanted to look like I DID just lay in the sun...without doing it.

I have VERY thin translucent skin...let's just say the nurses have NO problem finding a vein since you can see them all!

I actually do not mind that aspect of my complexion but I loved how in the summer my skin would get a great tan and cover that up and I missed it...since I am starting my whole spring/summer Mountain Girl collection!

I made it a little mission to find a great 100% organic chemical free product that I could use on my face and body.

I found it. and I love it.

Chocolate Sun Absolute Sun Sunless Tanning Cream.

They use a DHA complex derived from sugar beets with antioxidants, minerals and even SPF.

So it's not just a lotion you put on...it actually nourishes your skin and protects it from the sun at the same time....I know it is a bit pricey but it's a great treat to give yourself and your skin.

and YES I am wearing the lotion in all the pictures for today!

The Bell's Palsy Dream and What Does It All Mean

It is just one of those weeks....

I've been having the strangest dreams including one where I had Bell's Palsy which is a facial Paralysis virus.

Rarely do I ever really recall actually SEEING my own face in my dreams but I did last night and it was all swollen and strange because of being numb...

Eventually in the dream I couldn't really talk or communicate with other people around me..

but there was this guy who was trying to make out with me regardless...

Then my right arm started to go numb as well..

Is anyone else experiencing those strange kinds of dreams?

Do you think dreams mean certain things?

I am still trying to figure out if they actually did mean something or if I've just been drinking a bit to much wine and not going to the gym enough...

At any rate...it's been a rough week for my heart, head and soul...but especially my heart.

This Bridget Jone's Diary clip describes it all...

I still find joy and happiness in my work though...and I hope it comes through for all the items I've been creating this week...

PS...went to the Cambridge MA Goodwill and it was AMAZING...found so many great items including this vintage blouse...!

I know this is an awkward pose but it was first thing in the morning and coffee had not taken it's effect quite yet...

After waking up this morning to freezing rain I said THAT'S IT!

I'm going to go to the most interesting warm and cozy place I know and I will take my Mountain Girl pics inside...

Luckily the most interesting place i know is less then a 10 minute drive from my house...well...15 if you count the Volvo trudging behind many plows through the mucky mess in the roads..

I went to Mindfull Books and Ephemera and the owner John(he runs it with his amazing wife Martha) was wonderful and allowed us to do our shoot there...with some really tasty coffee!

My beautiful friend Heather Miller created this hand painted sign and has many more amazing paintings inside as well!

Mindfull Books and Ephemera is a community shop with a cozy bohemian atmosphere(perfect for Mountain Girl!), where you can sip a cup of java(or tea if that's your thing) surrounded by used and vintage books, paper, art, collectibles, music and gorgeous bright colors adorning the walls!
PS. even the toilet seat cover is multicolor in pink tones, I almost died when I first saw it and have been searching high and low for my own since
sigh...I have no life.

I'm having one of those days where I am a bit ashamed of going to get my hair done...has anyone else ever felt like that?

I KNOW I needed it trimmed(OKAY and highlighted)..but part of me wanted to call and cancel the appointment so I could save the money...it's still so hard to spend money on MYSELF, is that just part of being a woman...does it ever go away?

Here are some AMAZING finds today...and I didn't spend more then $40 on everything combined!

Outfit #1:

-Wrap Floral Print Vintage Polyester Blouse: $3.50 with a matching tie! (had to snatch this one off the mannequin...always feel weird doing that!)
-Amazing Orange Vintage VELVET high waisted bell bottoms...$5!!! Probably my new favorite pants...

Outfit #2:

-Woven Fringe Scarf/Hip Wrap: $2

Here are my FAVORITE finds of the day:

-AMAZING vintage black and white print/fur lace up winter boots....for $6!! I almost died when I saw these AND they fit perfectly

Buffalo Wings, A Beer and Listing New Items!

I am happy to report that I am listening to music, happily eating a few buffalo wings AND I have also opened up a Long Trail beer to sip on intermittently while I list all these NEW gorgeous fun items today...check out the pictures below....

I've been thinking about Mountain Girl and my life goals A LOT lately...no bad thoughts..just more hopes and dreams sifting through my mind...

I sometimes wish I had my "insert bad word here" more together.

But I know this is all a long but lovely learning process. Learning how to manage money, supplies, shipping, and taking care of getting my creations out there are all part of this big process.

I appreciate you all for sticking by while I learn, sometimes the hard way, on my own =)

I didn't always know that this would be how I made my living but I am so happy it is.

I hope everyone has a great and safe weekend...for those of you in the cold...stay warm! And for those of you in the warm weather.....well..I'm just jealous!

My LIfe as a Foster Dog Mom

Love Is Forever.

You might know that I create and design clothing as that is a huge passion of mine but I am also a full time foster dog mom as well!

I have my dog, Paisley(rescued from PR), she is my forever dog and I am her forever mom.

But please meet Spunky, my current lovely foster dog:

She is a Jack Russell Terrier mix and is 7, full of love, life and ready for a loving family.

She gets along with Paisley wonderfully and is a great short term addition to our cottage on the farm!

If you are not familiar with fostering, it is a great way to care and love for orphaned dogs who are in between a shelter and a forever home.

You can foster a dog anywhere from a few weeks to even a few months...however long it may take the rescue program to find a perfect forever home for them.

It gives these amazing dogs an opportunity to get out of a shelter style life and into a loving home where they can be cared for and loved on a one on one basis to prepare them for a long term home.

It's great to get a dog who has been fostered because the foster family can tell you all you need to know about the dog's behaviors and quirks because they actually LIVED with the dog and know it like their own.

Rescues and shelters are always looking for great volunteers to foster their dogs, cats etc because no animal ever really WANTS to be in a shelter environment although some have no choice.

If you think you might be interested in fostering a dog you can get in contact with your local rescues and shelters and through PetFinder.com

I encourage anyone who is even considering getting a dog to maybe foster a dog first, since it is a short term deal, you can see how a dog would fit into your life to make sure you are making a forever decision which is best for you and the animal

I LOVE puppies but consider adopting or fostering a dog if you haven't before because there are so many wonderful dogs out there who can't wait to be loved...

Introducing: Mountain Girl "Peaced Together" Backpacks

Happy Almost Friday Everyone!

I had a great day sewing yesterday and have created a new item for the shop!

Peaced Together Backpacks using ethnic and exotic fabric scraps that I have complied over the last few years. There was a HUGE pile and I am so happy to finally have a home for all of the lovely little scraps.

They consist of lots of handwoven Peruvian cottons, Mexican patterns and embroidery, silks, metallic appliqued scraps and of course lots of colorful vintage bag pouches and woven wallets that I've added onto the fronts for pockets.

I will be posting them this afternoon!
